Tips to get fluency as a Polyglot faster

Language is a key element in communication. It is often seen that semantics play a significant role in any form of communication. Hence, people always feel yearn for the advantage of possessing knowledge of the language in which the other person is communicating. This is important because one can by having the knowledge of the language not only avoid misunderstandings, but also achieve the desired objective of the communication. Thus, were born a creed of individuals who learned a number of languages. Such individuals are called polyglots. Multilingualism is quite common in certain parts of the world, especially Europe and the Indian subcontinent were speaking, even five languages is not an uncommon occurrence.

The idea should not be to get a staggering number of different languages and polyglotism. The idea should be to learn the nuances of each language rather than simply have a cache of unworthy language knowledge which is not worth much. A lot of people have notions of learning new languages, but often do not get round to the actual learning due to a feeling that it is either tedious a process. Hence, here are a few tips for polyglots as to how one may approach this endeavor:

  • The very initial language of foreign nature, which one attempts to learn should be as simple as possible. The idea which is critical here is to imagine and imbibe the thinking process involved in the language. Once an alien language is learned, the mental block of communicating in foreign lingos will not seem surreal. One can start with the easier western European languages or a language about which one is passionate.
  • There is another misnomer that one needs to learn every word in a new language which is not a requisite. If one were to check, they would find that they do not know all the vocabulary of their mother tongue as well. The key is to learn the pool of commonly used words which can be used infrequently to hold a conversation.
  • A good suggestion is to begin with Spanish. The language is widely acknowledged and is easier to learn due to less grammatical complexities. Research also shows that learning the language can enhance the capacity and pace to absorb any other language.
  • One can also learn languages quickly by identifying cognates or words which have a common origin or roots. These words sound similar and thus provide a connection between languages.
  • One should not wait to be in a country to start speaking its local language. Practice makes a person perfect the intonation and pronunciations. One may even choose to listen to shows of that language on radio, TV or even the internet.
  • It is best to learn one language at a time, so as to avoid getting unnecessarily confused, especially for beginner polyglots.
  • One should know when one is ready and comfortable to move to the next language. While the idea is to learn quickly, too much haste can do more damage.

People who are polyglots have immense advantages. They can work in Foreign Service offices as well as travel the world without inhibitions or limitations of communication. Professional Polyglots tend to pick up local languages quickly and develop innate abilities of comprehending foreign languages due to a deep ended knowledge of various languages.
